Our Mission

Fostering a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners in pragmatics and related disciplines, dedicated to advancing the frontiers of knowledge, promoting innovative research, and disseminating cutting-edge findings to enrich understanding of African communication, culture, and society, while collaborating with global partners, supporting capacity building, and advocating for the relevance and application of pragmatics in African contexts

Objectives of the Association

To provide an outlet for the continued discussion of pragmatics and related disciplines (such as cognitive linguistics, stylistics, conversational studies, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis) and their relevance to intellectual and societal development in Africa;
To serve as the rallying point for African national pragmatics groups, and other special interest groups, for the development of a concertedly rounded professional outlook that is consistent with global best practices in the area of pragmatics
To encourage and coordinate research in pragmatics and related disciplines that is geared towards scientific understanding of African societal and communicative dynamics
To support the publication of cutting-edge scientific research in pragmatics; and to disseminate knowledge within the discipline through the Journal of African Pragmatics and other appropriate outlets, electronically and otherwise
To organise conferences, workshops and summer schools as a means of building capacity in the discipline of pragmatics
To cooperate with relevant pragmatics associations, particularly, the International Pragmatics Association, and other related groups, when necessary, to promote the interests of the discipline.
